Food Storage Items Available At a Discount Price

There is a member in Chandler who works for a small company (Diversified Products USA), that sells all kinds of Industrial Supplies to companies like Intel, Microchip, etc. He is able to get products for food storage at a discounted price. Here is information in his own words.

My mother-in-law and 6 of her friends were trying to find somewhere to purchase 6.5 gallon pails and 5 gallon stackable water containers for their year supplies. Because I work with manufacturers every day, I told them to let me see for what price I could get them the exact products. I was able to save them quite a bit. I also discovered that by ordering items by the truckload that I could lower the price even more.

Any Member that desires to participate may call me or email me directly and send their orders directly to my office.
Order due dates will be the 15th and the 30th of Every Month going forward. Order Forms with checks should be mailed by the 13th and 28th to arrive on time. Members of all Stakes and Wards are welcome to participate on every Order Date.

The Cannery's prices will be changing on June 20th. Good News! Most products will be a little bit cheaper! The price list will be posted on the provident living website soon (but not yet). I will update the link on this site as soon as I get word that the new prices are up.

Oh the Changes That Have Been Made

I have been blissfully unaware of changes that have been made at the cannery lately. Apparently I was not on the correct email list for the cannery and as they have been sending out updates I have not been getting them. I apologise to anyone who has been unable to get what they need from the cannery because of misinformation.

First change is that there is now a limit of 60 cans (or 10 cases) per household. There can be a combination of food items or just one item but no more that 60 can per month.

Also starting in April you will need a printout from you ward or stake specialist showing what you ordered. Unfortunately there have been people (not from out stake) who have been taking home far more than they ordered which ends up with others not being able to get what they need. As this is a new change for us please be patient. I will get the information for everyone in the stake that puts in an order and will bring the printouts to the cannery on our canning date. Please don't use your own printout as the Cannery has asked us to use different colored paper each month and they will be checking for that color.

Reminder!

Here is you reminder that if you put in an order for February our canning day is on Tuesday. Also, one week left to put in orders for the March Canning Day. This is the first time White Wheat is available in a long time! Order due Sunday February 22nd.

White Wheat Available

At long last white wheat is available again to order. In March white wheat will be offered to can instead of red wheat. Hurray!

I am so overwhelmed! Where do I start?

If you haven’t already, read the Family Home Storage pamphlet put out by the church. After reading the pamphlet, make a plan to acquire your food storage little by little (set a monthly budget). You can start by building a three month supply of food that your family normally eats (cereal, spaghetti, canned vegetables, etc). There are many ways to do this and none are necessarily the right way. Some of the food storage blogs listed to the right discuss different ways to do this. Do whatever works best for your family but please remember to be prudent and not to go into debt to establish your food storage.

How do I put in an order to the Cannery?

First find out what is available from the cannery this month here or from your ward canning specialist. Next fill out an order form that can be found online here or you can get a copy from your ward canning specialist. There is a 60 can (or 10 cases) limit on how much you can order each month. Turn in your order to your ward canning specialist 3 weeks prior to the canning date. You can double check the date by checking this site in the left column. If you do not have a canning specialist in your ward you can email your order to me at phoenixnorthcanning(at)gmail(dot)com Ta dah! You did it!

I put in an order. . . now what?

Come to the cannery on the assigned date and time. Bring your list of what you ordered. You will not be able to change what you ordered when you get there. The Cannery is located in Mesa at 235 South El Dorado. Find somebody in your ward to carpool with if you can.

Bring with you a blank check (occasionally the cannery does not get an expected shipment of an item and it will not be available, so don’t fill out the amount). Also, wear closed toed shoes. It can really hurt you toes if you drop a can on them! Canning assignments normally take about an hour and a half. If you have any questions while you are there I will normally be there to ask as well as the missionaries and volunteers there.

What is available to order from the cannery?

Every month a third of the cannery’s items will be available to order. The items rotate every three months.

JANUARY - Milk, Regular Oats, Macaroni, Carrots, Apples, and Pinto Beans
FEBRUARY - Potato Flakes, Fruit Drink Mix, Sugar, Black Beans, Rice and Quick Oats
MARCH - White Beans, Refried Beans, Cocoa, Flour, Onions and Red Wheat
APRIL - Milk, Regular Oats, Macaroni, Carrots, Apples, White Wheat, and Pinto Beans
MAY - Potato Flakes, Fruit Drink Mix, Sugar, Black Beans, Rice and Quick Oats
JUNE - White Beans, Refried Beans, Cocoa, Flour, Onions and Red Wheat
JULY - Milk, Regular Oats, Macaroni, Carrots, Apples, White Wheat, and Pinto Beans
AUGUST - Potato Flakes, Fruit Drink Mix, Sugar, Black Beans, Rice and Quick Oats
SEPTEMBER - White Beans, Refried Beans, Cocoa, Flour, Onions and Red Wheat
OCTOBER - Milk, Regular Oats, Macaroni, Carrots, Apples, White Wheat, and Pinto Beans

What if I can’t go to the cannery on our assigned day?

Not everyone is available to go the cannery on our assigned day. If you cannot come, family canning days are available on the first and third Friday evenings of the month. You can call the cannery directly (480-214-9114) to set up a time on these nights to do your canning.

The cannery also has available for pick up from the cannery pre packaged pinto beans, quick oats, rice, and red wheat. You can just stop by next time you are in Mesa to pick these up, but it’s best to call before hand to ensure that they have the items you want. Also at the distribution center near the temple you can pick up a starter kit. To make it even easier these items can be ordered online through church distribution and delivered right to your door! Prices will vary though, from those that you can yourself and those that are prepackaged and delivered.

Our Stake has a portable canner that can be used to can any bulk items that you buy at the cannery or elsewhere. Email me at phoenixnorthcanning(at)gmail(dot)com for more information on the portable canner. Bulk items can be picked up at the cannery any time but they have a limit of 300 lbs per family per 30 days. If you are using the Stake Canner remember that you need to purchase cans, lids, and oxygen packs from the cannery.

Lastly, don’t forget that the cannery isn’t the only resource for food storage items. Many places on the internet have great food storage items for sale for reasonable prices.

What about Wet pack?

Unfortunately the wet pack cannery operates separately from the dry pack. I do not get regular updated information on the wet pack. If you have questions it is best to call them directly at 480-967-8551. As I get information I will post it.
